Why 2016 wasn´t a good year for gaming
With the end of 2016 many gaming magazines posted their Opinion about the past gaming year. Of course I want to start my blog with such a generic post too! So come along and revisit the major game releases of this year!
“2016 was a bad year for gaming”
This is probably one of the most common thoughts concerning 2016 and even if I don´t agree I can see where this comes from.
When you look back at the past year´s blockbusters and Highlights you don´t really get reminded of awesome games or outstanding experiences when you think about games like Mafia 3 or Final Fantasy XV for example. Even games like DOOM or Dark Souls 3 disapointed some long time series fans.
So let´s take a closer look at some of the big releases of this year and why 2016 is considered as such a bad year for gaming and hopefully find an answer to this problem at the end!
The major releases between January and April may have been some of the most disapointing games of the whole year. To start in a new year through mostly boring games is never a good sign.
With titles like Quantum Break, The Division or Far Cry Primal gamers got bland and generic games, that were far under their expectations.
Remedy delivered an interesting concept with Quantum Break that sadly could not hold on to the expectations from their fans. Its shooter mechanic, that was repetitive and boring , could only survive throught the time abilities, while the story telling and especially the TV series delivered a boring and bland way to tell a story with a promising idea.
With The Division and Far Cry Primal Ubisoft released two games that didn´t live up on our expectations either. The Divsion was a grinding-festival without much content and clunky mechanics that only survived due to extensive patching throughout the year. Far Cry Primal on the other hand was an experiment to break the chains of the shooter genre and switch to … the Melee genre? Whatever, due to its bad Melee gameplay and repetitive mechanics overall it couldn´t fulfill its goal and ended up as a beautiful stone age simulator.
Only strategy fans could enjoy their time to its fullest with the release of 2K´s XCOM 2. They got one of the best strategy games of this year, that could deliver tactical and fun combat mixed with extensive amount of customisation and base building!
During the usually lame summer phase 2016 had some of its biggest and best game releases of the whole year, so lets briefly check ´em out!
With DOOM and Uncharted 4 maybe the best shooters of this year were released. DOOM tried to deliver an old school experience mixed with modern graphics and gameplay features aaaaand it failed … at least for me, while many people enjoyed and loved it I could never really have fun with it. Why? Well that´s something for a future post!
On the other hand Naughty Dog delivered an amazing game as usual with stunning graphics and versatile combat systems, that allows you to play stealth or action focused in a lot of areas. What else can I say? Buy it!
So let´s come to everyones favourite multiplayer shooter Overwatch! Well what can I say, I think everyone knows how good it is. Oh and Battleborn … second, what´s that game?
To finish up with the good games of summer let´s don´t forget From Softwares´s Dark Souls 3 which delivered a worthy ending to this amazing trilogy mixed with reference to old Souls games and interesting time theories mixed with an upgraded combat, it truly was an amazing game.
And of course the big failures like Homefront: The Revolution and Mirror´s Edge Catalyst.
Both games wanted to continue their beloved predecessor, even tho Homefront wasn´t such a good game. And oh man, they failed in every part, both were a buggy mess filled with unfunctional Combat mechanics and boring open worlds. And don´t forget the horrible skill system and momentum in Mirros Edge: Catalyst that prevented the climbing system of reaching its full potential. Let´s just forget them …
So let´s start with the Xbox One exclusive ReCore and Gears of War 4 which were, at least in my opinion, pretty solid. While ReCore had some solid gameplay but lacking level design it was still pretty fun. On the other hand Gears of War 4 was a pretty good Gears of War with one of the best Multiplayers this year but well, nothing new.
But don´t forget the amazing Stealth games that came out during these months Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and Dishonored 2. My personal favourites of this year, both games combine great AI and level design combined with fun gameplay which is supported by all these abilities and different playstyles. I love them, what else could I say! Maybe I´ll write something about their amazing design in the near future but who knows!
And during the last two months two games were released, two games that were awaited since 10 years to be exact, of course I´m talking about Final Fantasy XV and The last Guardian. To be honest, I really enjoyed them! Of course they couldn´t live up to the hype but both were solid games on their own. Even tho FFXV was a very strange experience especially during the last chapters it was fun and interesting. So yeah, I wouldn´t have expected these games really tried and could succeed!
Last but not least I wanna talk about the three big Multiplayer shooters that came out in winter Battlefield 5 … no, wait 1, Titanfall 2 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. To be honest I only played Titanfall 2 which sadly didn´t got as much attention as it deserves due to it´s bad release date between those other two titles but besides the Multiplayer which was quite similar to the first game the campaign really delivered some really fun hours compared to the generic campaigns of the other shooters. As usual Call of Duty seems like a massive failure and dissapointment but well, as expected, no wonder they tried to sell it through Modern Warfare Remastered.
Last but not least there were also a lot of dissapointments that weren´t that expected like Mafia 3, Steep or Watch Dogs 2, that looked promising but failed at their deadline in case of Mafia 3 that was a reptitive and buggy mess. While Ubisoft killed a promising Watch Dogs 2 with a wrong focus point on hipster hackers and delivering a bland and content lacking sports game with Steep.
When we look at these major releases we notice one thing:
Not much mainstream games where particularly amazing, nearly all games were just ok, bland or generic but these are the games most people won´t remember long. While all the “big niche” games like Dishonored 2 etc. were really great but didn´t find the audience they deserved.
In my opinion that´s why most people look back at 2016 and can´t remember a lot games, that impressed or surprised them, it was just a very unsurprisngly year when it comes to the big AAA games. Especially if you consider that a lot of games were successor´s of older games that didn´t have the biggest success. For me 2016 wasn´t a bad year for gaming since I loved all these niche games but for many people there just wasn´t that much they could really enjoy.
Surely this year had some great indie-games and other not that big games but many people just focus on these big AAA games that´s why I did the same to keep this post in a reasonable length.
So to conclude, it depends on you if it comes to the question if 2016 was a good year for gaming and for many people it wasn´t bad due to games like Overwatch etc. but surely it wasnt great:
It was just bland.
Don´t agree with my opinion? Wanna give feedback? Did i forgot a game that should absolutely be in this list?
