Formerly The Tribe, this game had a tough time with it´s name and the developers of the game The Tribez what ended up in them changing their name to Tribal Pass, so let´s take a look ourselves at this game!
Tribal Pass is an indie game, an indie endless runner to be exact … NO wait! It´s not one of these horrbile cash grabs that you can find everywhere! It promises to be a strategic rogue-like runner but are these just false promises or can it actually deliver?
The Gameplay of Tribal Pass is fairly simple: Run through the levels while collecting food so your Tribe doesn´t die.
To succeed at that you have 5 basic actions:
Equip nothing so you can pick up berries etc., equip spears to kill certain animals for food, equip torches to see during the night phases, kill your clan members and add some clan members. Additionally you can split or group your Tribe to either dodge obstacles or collect resources.
This may sound like a lot but since the game´s never too fast you always have “enough” time to decide what you gonna equip or if you will sacrifice some of your clan members. Because the core mechanic in this game is, as said before, the food and it´s connection to your clan. If you have a big clan you will get more points at the end of each level but you will consume your food faster, causing them to starve. So, you always have to keep a balance between those things while also reacting fast enough to food sources like deers. To be honest, it works quite well and gives the game a deepness that you won´t see at many endless runners but don´t expect a revolution fo the genre here.
The main problem however is the tutorial of the game combined with the time you´re motivated to play it. While the tutorial gives you a good overview of the different basic mechanics it tells you nothing about the different obstacles like flies that eat your food. Since the game will only be motivating enough for 2-3h maybe, due to it´s single game mode and easy difficulty if you just have 3-5 clan members, you will spend most of your time figuring out what all these obstacles do instead of actually playing the game. You will die more often cause of lack of information than because of your skill and that´s pretty frustrating. Oh and all tooltips are written in really meeeh english.
I don´t know if I have to say much about the game´s looks, they´re not something new or innovative but they´re enough for it to function, especially at that pricepoint.
To conclude, Tribal Pass is quite an interesting game, it actually delivered on it´s promise to be a more tactical endless runner, which I honestly didn´t expect from it even tho it has it´s flaws at its tutorial and longterm motivation.
Lets´s just say this:
As a man who hates endless runners I actually had fun with Tribal Pass for some hours.
