Why Resident Evil 7 is important for the industry
With the release of Resident Evil 7 on the 24th january 2017 not only a good Horror game (with a lot flaws) was released. In my opinion, the future for Horror games came out.
But why do I consider it as the future for Horror games? What makes it so important?
To answer these questions you have to understand the situation of Horror games before Resident Evil 7 and what the release of it may cause:
The situation of current Horror games
If you think about the last 2-3 years and even more, how many AAA Horror games came out then? Not many, right? Nearly none, right? The AAA industrybecame even more profit focused and less experimental and well, Horror games are big experiments because they don´t attract a big aduience, because they are hard to make and because they can fail so easily and waste some millions.
During the past years the Horror genre got the most attention of indie developers and that wasn´t a good thing. Honestly, I hate nearly all indie Horror games of the past years. And this has one simple reason:
They became unscary.
And I´m not talking about little games that no one knows, I´m talking about games like Outlast, they just focused to attract the attention of streamers and youtubers who have to deliver sick reactions to their viewers.
That´s the short version tho, to detail my problem in all it´s complexity I plan to write a dedicated post about this soon, because no one else does it apparently …
The main reason for this, in my opinion, is their budget and time, such games are so much easier to do than actually scary games and often bring more revenue in because the promotion through streamers etc. will blow up. Something that AAA games can avoid, games like Alien Isolation, that offered good gameplay with a dense and actually creepy and clever atmosphere withou many jumpscares.
But why is Resident Evil 7 so important then, if Alien Isolation already exist? Well, if you look at the statements of SEGA you may see that it wasn´t that successfull. During the past years some AAA Horror games came out but they weren´t that successfull and that´s what scared the industry off.
In my opinion, this could change now, because of two things Capcom really nailed with this game:
Resident Evil 7 has one big advantage over Alien Isolation, it offers something for everyone. Wanna shoot with a rifle? You can do it in this game! Wanna experience good Horro? You can do it hear! I think you get my point right? Even tho it is a Horror game Resident Evil 7 isn´t focused on stealth like Alien Isolation for example, it focuses on offering a bit of everything and in a good quality to attract the biggest audience possible.
So it doesn´t focus on one certain audience but also making every part of it decently or good, especially the atmosphere is amazing. This is also the reason for it´s good ratings, Resident Evil 7 isn´t a game that says: I´m a niche game and I know it. It tries to get out of that niche by being streamlined. It´s smooth and appeals to many.
Even tho many people say, that Resident Evil 7 isn´t a Resident Evil it´s maybe the smartest decision they could have done.
Resident Evil is one of the most influential names in the industry, many people connect to this name, many people love this name. Of course there will be people hating it, that´s expected but think about it, what´s better for a game:
Some potential hate but the advantages of one of the biggest names in the industry, the promotion coming with it and the long time fans that will buy it OR a new name without the hate but the need to promote it and getting an audience.
It´s pretty clear what would be better right? That´s the reason for their decision, at least in my opinion.
How will it affect the future?
Resident Evil 7 won´t fail, it will most probably be quite successfull. The only thing standing in it´s way would be it´s short duration which really turns a lot people off, probably because they didn´t give the team too much time or money to steal off that Silent Hills hype as fast as possible. But since that´s pretty obvious I don´t think I have to talk that much about it.
So, let´s say Resident Evil 7 is successfull, what will the big industry and indie developers think? Maybe something like: Oh, Horror games that are clever and versatile still seem to have a big audience, maybe we should try it again.
This game could have sent a sign to the profit focused industry as well as the indie devs, that think only jumpscary streamer games are successfull, that smart Horror games are worth the work and believe, at least that´s what I hope.
The game industry needs such a sign and this could be it, otherwise the Horror genre could be dead soon, overloaded by jumpscare festivals like Five Nights at Freddy´s or Outlast that don´t offer Horror, just bad Gameplay
Well, all I can is hoping, that the game industry finally decides to bring back those good Horror games that I so barely miss but that´s still in the stars.
Do you agree with me? Wanna give feedback?
